Scientists at Stanford University have engineered mice whose cortex is largely composed of human brain cells. To achieve this, they genetically modified the rodents so that their cortex and hippocampus would not develop properly, creating enough space for human neural organoids grown in the lab to be implanted and to proliferate. After several weeks, almost half of the animal’s brain volume consisted of human tissue. The mice with this substitution displayed normal locomotion and vocalizations, though they showed memory deficits in maze tests. In contrast, the animals that received the human cells performed better on those same tests, suggesting that the human tissue confers some cognitive function to the organism.
