Alex Duffy, co‑founder and CEO of Good Start Labs, told Latent Space that his company is turning video games into training data for AI models. The idea came after watching a Twitch stream where advanced models played the strategy game Diplomacy—a match that normally takes several days to finish. Duffy, who previously led AI training at Every, saw an opportunity to speed up that process by generating large numbers of simulated games.
Good Start Labs was spun out of Every’s incubator in October last year and has raised $3.6 million from General Catalyst, Inovia, Every itself, and several angel investors. The firm aims to build game environments that are easy to access and that replicate human behavior, so algorithms can learn skills such as decision‑making, negotiation, and large‑scale planning.
This approach matters because, if models can be effectively trained on data derived from games, the cost and time required to develop AI capable of solving real‑world complex problems will shrink.
